I work with Autistic adults everday and Asperger's is very similar except children with Aspeger's usually are higher functioning. CONSISTENCY is the key to children and Asperger's. Your child is actually still young to be trained completely with Asperger's as most of the people that I work with are around 10 or 11 when trained. However this does not mean your child will be this age before being completed potty trained. Consistency and remember children and especially children with Asperger's Syndrome are very sensitive to what you are feeling (frustration, etc.) so try to relax and your child WILL get it.

hey. i had a similiar experience. my son who is now 9 has mild to moderate high functioning autism. the special ed worked on it as well as me. i became convinced there was a real problem. he was 6 and a half before he finally did it. once he trained the good thing was we have never had one accident. their sensory issues keep them from getting dirty. you wanna know what worked. i told him if you put your pee and poop in the potty i will take you to the toy store and let you pick out a prize. he acted as though he didnt hear me but the next time he needed to go he just went.

I'm a special education teacher and first must tell you to keep trying. I teach High School and have too many students that come to me and are not toilet trained. Now, I recommend that you talk to your son's teachers and have them develop a social story for your son about toilet training. Also, because your son has Asperger's you are going to need to make toilet training very structured. Many of the reinforcements that worked for others may not work for him. Give him a checklist to check off as he uses the toilet. Hope this helps.

I have Asperger, but I can't help you on this subject with the potty training, the thing my mother told me years ago is that I was trained early at 2 I was day and night trained, because I hated to be wet or messy, but this was back in the 70's when the diapers were mostly cloth and plastic pants and today's diapers are so absorbant that if you use Huggies or Pampers, he won't even feel he's wet, I suggest you use the new Pull-Ups with Feel Wet Liner or Pampers Feel'N'Learn, because the concept of design fading when wet would not work with an Asperger, maybe the wetness feeling will start to bother him and he will learn quickly.

I have no idea how to even begin w/ my son. We have tried and stopped and tried and stopped. They were working on it at my son's special ed pre-school to no avail. I can't possibly be the only one w/ this problem, and was wondering if anyone had advice or knows of a book on the subject? He has a difficult time understanding concepts, and has been diagnosed twice, once as Asperger's and more recently as high functioning autism. There must be information out there?
