Actually, she already knows several signs as my sister in law is a school teacher for the deaf and has sent me several excellent dvds. I did not even think of using signs for potty training. Thank you for the tip. Cathy

I am so happy to tell you that you can teach her to sign. A common misconseption is that it will keep a child from speaking but it is NOT true. You don't have to go all out if you don't want to but to get you through the potty training stage there are a few easy signs that should help. Potty, wahing hands, more, and all done. Your local library should have some simple baby signing books in the childrens section. I hope this helps. GOOD LUCK!;)

potty training a child with limited ability to talk

I need help-my 3 1/2 year old daughter has cortical dysplasia which involves her speech center. She is of average intelligence but it quite delayed in her ability to speak. She understands most of what people say to her. She has shown no signs that she is ready to potty train but I am ready to start. Am I expecting too much? How do I start and train a child who cannot speak? Thanks for any help that you can provide. Cathy
