Just wanted to share my story

Hi, I'm a mother of two girls (Terra who is five and Gina who is two) and I'm currently in the process of training my youngest one. I seem to be very lucky with potty training so I decided to share some stories here and hopfully offer advice.

My mother always told me that potty training begins with the first diaper change, but I never exactly understood what she meant by that until I began potty training my big girl Terra.

At the time that Terra was in diapers, there was a huggies brand out known as Convertibles (haven't seen 'em in a while) that I used. They could be placed on as a diaper or taken off as a pull up.

About a month after Terra turned one (possibly 14 months old) I noticed that she could take the diaper off by herself and she knew when to take it off. Whenever I would take her for a diaper change, she would pull the diaper off before I could get to it, or whenever I was about to give her a bath, as I undressed her, she would take her diaper off. She could also pull the diaper back up by herself.

So it was summer at that point and most days I just had her in a t-shirt and a diaper. I began to notice that she would take her diaper off whenever it was wet. With this in mind I figured she was ready for potty training, but considering her age, I was reluctant to start, so I decided to go in a different process. We never actually used pull ups for training and I can promise you we certainly didn't use a potty chair.

I started taking her into the bathroom and pulling her diaper down and sitting her on the toilet. She made a few tinkles sometimes but that wasn't my main goal. I got her into the process of taking her diaper off and pulling it back on.

Whenever I took her to the toilet, she knew to pull her diaper off and when I took her off the toilet, she knew to pull it back on. As time went on she began to make it in the potty more and more frequently, she even made a few poops. We had less and less diaper changes until she was only wearing one diaper a day. I got so used to doing this process with her, I didn't even realize she was potty training.

It finally hit me a few weeks after she had turned two and she asked to start going potty on her own. The entire time we had been doing this, I had been sitting her on the toilet and holding her. No potty chair, not even a seat adjuster on the potty, so I was a little worried to let her go at it alone.

I let her try it on her own with my supervision and I was amazed at her progress. She would pull her diaper off, climb up on the toilet, tinkle, and climb off, all by herself. I started putting her baby wipes on the floor next to the toilet so she could wipe. The only part she needed my help with was washing her hands.

By the time she was 30 months old, she was almost completly potty trained. She would get up in the morning, take her convertible off and put it in the waste basket in her room, take a new one out of the drawer and put it on all on her own.

She rarely had accidents at this stage, and my biggest concern was finding out if she did have an accident, as I soon discovered the only time she would have an accident, it was poop.

I realized that my little big girl had started changing her own diapers! I caught her on one occasion when she did accidentally poop in her diaper after a rather loud fart alerted me to it. She instantly looked up and ran to her bedroom. I had to chase after her.

When I finally caught up to her, I found her in the bathroom with her baby wipes. She pulled her diaper off and carefully placed it in the garbage can in the bathroom. She then cleaned her bottom with the baby wipes and put those in the garbage as well, and even took one baby wipe to clean her hands with!

She had brought another diaper with her from her bedroom to change into now that she was clean. When she saw me standing in the door way, she looked up and smiled and said "I can do it myself!"

After seeing this I knew she was ready for pull ups. We didn't need them for long though! On her 3rd birthday, I bought her several pairs of panties and I can't recall an accident since she was two.

She learned in a different way than most kids do, but I'm very proud of Terra's story, and perhaps it will help out any mom's to be with potty training advice.
