When my 4 year old nephew was 2, he could never stop drinking the water in the sippy cup. If you took away his sippy cup, he would either cry or scream. Mostly it's the screaming. Some of the time, there would be nothing in the sippy cup. At least my 2 daughters were not like that when they were 2.

I would have to agree with the previous posts, I too have a 2 year old daughter and also a 1 year old daughter. with both of them, I did cold turkey with the bottle and the sippy cup. yeah, they cried but it wasn't more than half hour with the first night and the second was only 10 min and the third was only enough for her to say that she cried! ! ! If you stick with it, and wait out your child, it will really work. If you give in, the next night will be harder cause your child will know that you will cave if they only cry loud and long enough! !

You know, I have experienced the same thing with my 2 yr old daughter. I took her sippy cup away about two or three mos she started potty training she started to have accidents in her bed. She also seems to find it as a security blanket just like her blanket that she sleeps with all the time. I had to break it off so that she wouldn't have any accidents anymore. Yeah they might probably cry for it or ask for it, but they have to learn to stay dry all night. It's going to take some time, but soon they'll be fully potty trained and they'll really feel like a big kid. Whenever I would get her ready for bed she would ask for it, but I would tell her that it's empty that she'll get it in the morning or after her nap. Even though sometimes it not really empty I would tell her that anyway. Give that a try and see if it works. Good luck.

With my daughter I just stopped giving it to her and after a week she stopped asking for it. She would get up in the night to ask for it but I found that letting her scream for a few minutes was easier to handle than I thought it would be. Does he sleep with you or in his own room that is the other thing to consider? If he sleeps in your room it will be harder to take the cup away, because he knows that you are right there.

How to get my son to sleep without a sippy cup

Sep 25, 2008 9:52 AM
I did the wrong thing and got my son used to sleeping with a sippy cup of water at night. Potty training didn't even occur to me when we let him sleep with a cup. He will drink one and sometimes two sippy cups of water at night when he goes to bed (and some days he will just hold the cup and not drink any). It is like a security object along with his blankie and special bunny.

He is potty trained (for the most part) during the day (he's 2 yrs and 3 months old) and usually stays dry during naps (he takes naps in pullups just in case) but obviously nighttime training is out of the question as long as he is drinking THAT much at night.

Any creative ideas of how to get him to not sleep with his cups of water??!?!?!?!
