I have not had to be in the situation that you are in rigt now but I have a 3yr old son and he was refusing to wear underwear cause he thought that pullups were big boy underwear. For the longest time he would not wet himself in the pullups but would do it in the underwear. On his 3rd birthday we got him some Car underwear cause the Movies Cars is his favourite and since then he has been good and gave up the pullups! So maybe try getting her some underwear with her favourite character(s) on them and see if that works.

I took both the kids shopping to buy underwear, Ethan got superman undies but Izzy refused to buy any.
I did get her to agree to wear the "potty training pants" but only if Ethan wears underpants over his diaper. I guess it’s a step forward even if it is a small step and it will be cheaper than buying pullups.

Jadesmommy my 6 year old wears diapers because he suffers from a form of urinary incontinence.

The reason I don’t let him wear underwear very often (I do occasionally in the house) is because its fight to get him to put a pullup/diaper on again afterwards.
The whole thing is better left as either one or the other. Also a specialist told us that if you keep switching between diapers and underwear it seems to the child like diapers are a punishment.

Why does your 6 year old wear diapers all the time? at 6 he should be way passed diapering age.
I understand he has a disorder that makes him pee alot but its no reason to keep him in diapers all the time. surly you can find atleast some time at home to let him have underwear.

Thank you so much for your reply, i dont know why i never thought of the potty training underwear before, ive already ordered a pack of them for her. yeah they are washable.

i will also buy some cartoon undies for her and ethan, so if she doesnt wear the training underwear i'll always have it as a plan B.

It seems i made a typo in the Subject bit of the topic, mt fingure must have sliped, in put 3 instead of 4. :P

Well, i would probably agree with your view on the reason. Most young children like to emulate their elder siblings, especially if the age difference is not that large. This is especially true, it seems, when both or boys or when the younger one is a girl while the elder is a boy. Also, it could simply be because she's jealous of the attention her brother's getting because of his problem, and since she knows it comes from the diapers (as a visible sign), she would also probably want to try to use them as well. It COULD be just diaper security syndrome, in which case the only real way is just to switch her to underwear forcibly, but i kinda doubt that.

This problem is tricky. Normally, I would advise people to use their older kid as an example, either positive or negative, but that isn't applicable in this case. I did some brainstorming, and here are the stuff I came up with...

I took a look at your site, and noticed that you mentioned some 'potty training pants' that your elder son wore. Why not let her try those? They look enough like underwear to me, and since they're 'training pants' she may agree to wearing them. I hope they're washable.

Another one is getting her brother to wear underwear over his diaper as well. That, while obviously not a very good solution, may work. I don't know, its worth a try and see. You could try getting her underwear with her favourite cartoon characters on them. If she doesn't have any, get her to watch Cars or Finding Nemo :) those two are kid magnets.

You could also try sending her to childcare or somewhere where she gets to interact with other children her age. In that case, peer pressure may make her switch to underwear all on her own. At 4 years old, she is eligible to enrol in Kindergarten classes, or something similar. Never underestimate the power of peer pressure. I know this for a fact - its the reason why almost NONE of the boys in my Sunday Class wear diapers, since no one else wears them. This being since they turned 3, mind.

These are the methods i think have a chance of working. I hope they helped, somehow.

Good luck! And kudos for dealing so well with your son's problem! I know many parents who'd go crazy at the child if they were still having accidents at 5...keep up whatever you did!

Hello, I hope someone can give me some advice on this problem I have.
My 4 year old daughter is refusing to wear underwear, she just wants pull-ups, she hardly has any accidents anymore but she will not give them up. I think the reason is because she wants to be like her brother, he is 6 years old but suffers from Overactive bladder disorder and has to wear diapers/ pull-ups. I’ve tried explaining to her why he wears them but she still wont even try wearing underwear.
