KMN:

Well, your case is not that unusual - though this is the first time i've heard of cutting a hole in the pullup! Won't the stuffing leak out or something...anyway.

Try to find out the reason she doesn't like to do BMs on the potty. The reason is probably one of the following:

1) Your child is afraid of using the potty.

This is surprisingly common. Some children are actually afraid of using the potty to do their BMs, maybe because of the way it looks or something. They'd rather not look at it at all, and just get changed afterwards. To try and solve this, i'd suggest just gently explaining to her that it's perfectly ok. You may have to bribe her with stickers or something, or quality time, or may even have to stay with her the first couple of times. If she doesn't like the water splashing out of the toilet bowl, try and drop in some toilet paper before she goes - this should help minimize splashing.

2) Your child prefers the feeling of doing BMs in the pullup to doing BMs in the toilet.

Well, this one is rarer, but still fairly common, amazingly. Most of the time, they do so because they want to seek attention - especially from a busy parent, who will be forced to clean them up. However, most children do NOT like the feeling of a messed pullup/diaper. You could try one of two things here. The one you should try first is giving her good quality time with you in stead of her doing BMs in the pullup. Try to give her a significant amount of time doing something she likes, or bringing her to the park, basically spending time with her - alone. If this doesn't work, you might try the harsher method. Play on the fact that most kids don't like messy pullups - make her stay in them after she messes them, until they're fully wet or for a long period of time. Tell her you're not wasting a pullup on her BM when she can go on her own, and keep her in them. For this one, you will probably have to deal with crying, tantrums, and the like - be firm with her. You may also want to try switching to diapers instead for the second one - it has a smaller chance of the BM leaking out. Tape around the entire side, making sure to cover the tapesm with duct tape or masking tape, going around the diaper twice and ending up in the back so she can't take it off. I do not recommend using the second one except as a LAST RESORT.

Don't feel exasperated or discouraged - at least your child is relatively mild. Some people here have children who like to spread their BMs all over the room, on the walls, bed, everything.

In any case, all the best!

3 year old won't do BM without a pull up on

My 3 1/2 yr old daughter has been potty trained since around her 3rd birthday. But she will not have a BM on the potty. She did for an entire week at the beginning of July then she stopped and will not go now unless she has a pull up on. If we do not give her a pull up she will hold it for up to 3 days until we give her one. We've tried rewards of all types and always give very much praise. We've recently tried cutting a hole in the pull up and it worked twice, then she figured out what we did and now won't take a pull up unless it does not have a hole in it. It's getting very frustrating. If we ask her to try to go on the potty she starts crying and gets upset. As soon as the pull up is on, she goes. Any advice???
