Thank you for writing. I think you are headed in the right direction and can keep putting him on the potty chair even though he won't initiate it himself. This is a great step and he will likely make a BM in the potty eventually.

After he recovers from surgery in June you can try more and see if he'll progress with the training. Your pediatrician may also be able to help you with a personalized toilet training plan that accommodates your son's special needs, especially since he is not able to remove his own clothes at this point.

Special Needs Child and Potty Training

We would like some advice on potty training our special needs 4 year old. We bought a potty chair and he will sit on it and go potty before he has a bath, but won't make a BM. He will occasionally go at other times, but never initiates the activity. One other issue is that he will be having open heart surgery the beginning of June and will have a catheter for a few days, so we're kind of leaning toward waiting. He's very small--only 28 lbs., so diapers are still fitting him. He can't really work his clothes either, so we don't know what to do. His brothers are all a lot older than he is--2 are adults and one is in Highschool, so it's been awhile since I did any potty training. Regular rewards don't work with him. Any suggestions?
