My 4 year has no trouble peeing in the potty just trying to get go poop its a challenge. He is ready for Pre k soon and i do not know what to do? I put him on the potty after he is done eating but nothing happens. Then he goes into his room and pottys on himself. Any advice i would greatly appreciate it.

I've seen quite a few 4-year-olds or near 4-year-olds who aren't (won't) potty trained, so know you're not alone. But I'll tell you what I've told other parents in your situations: You are stuck in a battle of wills -- a battle you can't win.

First, I would rule out any medical problems with a visit to the pediatrician.

If your sons are physically healthy, then it's time to turn over the potty training to them. Tell them they are big boys and they are responsible for putting their pee and poop in the potty. Continue to keep them in underpants and clean up accidents without any emotion or comment. It's going to be messy and it might take a while, but eventually, your sons have to decide they want to take control of their own bodies.

Also, for some kids, imitiation is key. If they idolize older kids or feel peer pressure from kids their own age, they might want to go potty on their own.

Hang in there.

My son will be 4 Christmas Eve. He will pee on the toilet (only when prompted) and will poop in his pull up soon after trying on the toilet. I know boys take longer to potty train, but I am worried about him being the only one in pull ups in school. Could he be immature? I have tried rewards, tough love, bribery, games etc. He is academically advanced. I know the teachers at school are frustrated with this.

Potty training a 4yr. old boy

Oct 30, 2009 8:08 AM
My son turned 4 yrs. old 2 wks, ago. We've been working on potty training for the last 10 months. He was wearing big boy underwear during the day in the summer but would hold the pee until night time. Some days he would go on the potty but not often enough. Now he has completely regressed and only wears pull ups. He tells us "the pee doesn't come out." I've tried/read everything I could find. I think it is a control issue. Any suggestions?
