Yolanda. I'm so sorry you're going through this.

It's good that he is able to use the potty successfully so often. It's common to experience setbacks, but I suspect that there's something else going on here.

I'd back away from using punishment as an incentive. It can backfire, and it appears that your son might rebel against it.

Instead, it might be time to change up your rewards and be as positive as possible. If Santa is big in your house, use that now. I suggested to another mom in the same boat as you to pretend that Santa sent an early present with potty training gear, underpants and special Santa stickers (or whatever works for your son). Tell him Santa is so excited that he's going on the potty, he decided to send an early present. Keep up the rewards and praise throughout the holiday season, and hopefully, he'll become more consisent.

If Santa isn't an option, use a cartoon character or a favorite relative.

Good luck!

PLEASE HELP.... I'm STARTING TO LOSE HOPE

Nov 16, 2009 6:07 AM
PLEASE HELP... I am starting to lose hope with my 3 year old. I feel like I am getting no where with my 3 year old son. I know he knows how to go in the potty because he has gone a full day at daycare and at home without going on his self. He has days that he does so good and then he has day to were he doesn't even know what a potty is. Both me and my husband have tried everything from giving him rewards to taking things from him to going back to rewards, now I simple do not know what else to do. He has a 14 month old brother I give both of them equal amounts of attention. Please help before I give up all hope.
