My 3 1/2 year old daughter is still not potty trained. She is my 3rd child and my 1st two were trained very easily. She refuses to wear underwear. She will go potty if I set a timer for every 30 minutes, but will not tell me she has to go. She has never even pooped on the toilet. I'm about to go crazy. We've tried many different incentives and none have worked. I'm about to stop buying pullups and just see what happens.

My son turned 3 in September and will not go on the potty either! He shows multiple signs of readiness and we've tried an endlist list of incentives. His sitting turns into play and becomes preoccupied by his surroundings in the bathroom. A few minutes after trying, he announces that his diaper needs changed...which it does. What next????

Remember, every child trains differently. Your son might have a different timeline and different interest (or lack thereof).

There are more signs of readiness besides enthusiasm. Consider these:

Stays dry for up to two hours and through a nap.
Can follow instructions.
Can sit down for minutes at a time
Has bowel movements at about the same time every day
Is uncomfortable in dirty diapers
Can take off his diaper and undress himself
Is proud when he does something good

If your son shows these signs, he's probably ready. Use rewards, such as stickers, to encourage him while potty training, and try not to pressure him too much or he might rebel.

He's in charge of his body, and you can't make him train. But you can make it fun enough that he'll want to try.

3 year old - not even interested in the potty!!

Oct 11, 2008 4:21 PM
My son turned 3 in August and doesn't want anything to do with the potty. He's sat on the potty a couple times, but nothing consistent.

Do I really have to wait until he shows signs of interest ?? What if he doesn't?

My daughter was trained at 2, I know it wasn't this hard the first time.

Please offer any advice.. I need help!!
