Show him the mechanisms that will cause the toilet to flush automatically. Play with it a little bit, before and even after they sit down to go. Remember the energy you bring with you, keep it a fun, silly, no big deal, this scares us big people too, sometimes. Encourage him to play with it a bit, Encourage him to tell the mechanism how that makes him feel. All of my children went through that, too! It is frustrating. I am potty training my 26 month daughter right now, and she gets scared of the one at Mcdonalds. She would cry and scream and run as far away from it as she could. I have tried these techniqueswith her also, and now it still startles her but doesnt stop her from going. Which is perfectly acceptable. Before she goes I remind her that this is one of those loud ones that will flush itself. Then, I help her down and she moves away from it and I move with her and when it's done. We both say, "Your loud! You scared me!" I then tell her to tell the toilet, to use its inside voice and shush it, encourage him to say, Shush Toilet, Dont scare me, Your too loud." Then we laugh and make it a game. The child gets to have the last say, so to speak, I don't know why this works but it does, it has for all 7 of my potty trianing guinea pigs, lol. Hopes this will help you.

I had that experience with my son also. But it did not scare him at all though. He also found the button where you can push it to flush also. So I have found it was just easier for me to just cover the sensor up with my hand till he done his deed so you wont have to worry bout carrying something xtra with into the bathroom bc im sure you have enough already. And just washed our hands afterwards.

Well i know one thing is for sure, allways have pull ups with you when on the go and when you go to an airport, tell him/her beforehand about the toilets.

This sounds all too familiar to me! My daughter is 3 1/2 years old. We went out to dinner one night and encountered the automatic flush toilets. She completely freaked out. She's not scared of the toilet now (well.......she's not scared of ANYTHING at this point), but she will tell me to cover the thing so it won't flush. I just put my hand over the sensor until she's done. I am always amazed at the things that freak her out. lol Best of luck to you on this one! All I can say is to assure your child that you won't let the toilet flush while he/she is on it.

Just explaining won't work, its true, showing them how the things work will, they need to see the things to understand better, I'm the proud father of 2 twins of 4yrs old boys and one 7yrs old girl. I've got to explain to my boys how the auto flush worked by showing one to them in a airport so now they know its not dangerous. They were 4 when I explained this, but I guess this should work at 3 too, maybe showing them some exterior lights that turn on when someone get near them.

Simply explaining how toliets work will not solve the problem. Do you have a child that this happened to? One that is 3? Well I do and they don't really care how you explain it that is just real scary to them. My daughter actually devolped a fear of all drains tubs, sinks , toliets, etc... She is getting better with time but all you need is patients. Also when they are on regular toliets reassure them that it wont flush by its self. Use a potty chair at home if need be.

I guess you should show him one with auto flush and explain how they work and why they flush, this could help him a lot, if he's affraid of something, that's probably because he don't know what was this thing that flushed when he was on the toilet, you should explain and show him one and how they work, this would probably resolve your problem. The trick with electrical tape on the eye of the flush is not a bad idea, triple toilet paper (folded triple) work also, but never forget to take it off after use.

That same thing happened to my daughter at the mall. She would not use any toliet but her potty chair for a long time. Now if we are in public I try to avoid the toliets that flush automatically when possible. I always assure her this toliet wont flush on you.
A little trick with the auto toliets. Carry a roll of black electrical tape in your purse. Before he sits on the toliet put a piece right over the eye that flashes. Then the toliet wont flush.

automatic toilets

My 3 yr old son was doing GREAT with potty training. He was telling me when he needed to go and going no matter where we were. We weren't having any accidents and I thought we were almost through. Then we went to a restaraunt with automatic flushing toilets. It flushed on him twice, and now he is scared of the potty. I have to force him to go, even sometimes when we are at home. When he does go, he'll say "I go out before you flush" The worst part is, he isn't wetting or pooping in his pants because he wants to be big. How can I make him understand that he can't just hold it in and how can I get him to stop being afraid of the potty again?
