First mom needs to DITCH the diapers totally, all this is doing is rewarding the unwanted behavior. A good idea to do this would be to get rid of all but one, and tell the girl, "ok, last one, if you use this one there wont be anymore and you'll have to use the potty" Let the girl decide whether to use the diaper or the potty, and if she uses the diaper, next time remind her she used the last diaper and there are no more. Also get her some books on pooping, and explain why we poop, and what happens when we hold it. If she remembers when she got herself sick, keep reminding her of it, if she doesn't remember, then explain what sickness is, and teach her that she will get sick if she holds it in. Also offer her some special reward for pooping in the potty. Stickers she can put on a poster in the bathroom works great for both my kids.

On behalf of my friend who is having exactly this issue with her 2 1/2 year old daughter--any thoughts on what to do when you can't even get the girl to poop in the bathroom, much less on the potty in her Pull-Up? She's extremely resistant to the whole idea, even though she's totally potty-trained for pee. She'll actually go dry all day and then request a "baby diaper" for pooping. Mom is afraid to tell her there are no diapers left, for example, because the girl already went through a bout where she caused her own constipation by holding it on purpose. It got close to being a medical emergency there for awhile, and they had to pump her full of nasty stuff (little kid enemas, etc.) for weeks to straighten her out. Mom is getting so frustrated, especially because even the doctor commented that this could go on endlessly, since she's perfectly aware of the urge and knows to ask for a diaper just before. But I've been there and even seen her throw the biggest tantrum when the issue of pooping in the bathroom comes up. Any advice for her?

This is common. Some toddlers believe that poop is a part of their bodies, and they don't want to flush it down the toilet.

You can start to alleviate her fears with some books on poop, such as "Where's the Poop?"
http://www.amazon.com/Wheres-Poop-Julie-Markes/dp/0060530898
Or
"Everybody Poops"
http://www.amazon.com/Everyone-Poops-My-Body-Science/dp/192913214X/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1217443721&sr=1-1

Next, make sure she isn't constipated. She may have experienced a painful poop and associates it with the toilet. Ply her with water to soften her stool. If she's holding it in a lot, you might want to consult your pediatrician.

Next, avoid big scary toilets, like in public bathrooms.

Finally, this trick worked for my next door neighbor, whose son wouldn't poop in the potty. She had him sit on the toilet in his Pull-Up to poop. After a while, she secretly cut a hole in the Pull-Up so the poop went through into the toilet. Then she told him, "See? You're such a big boy, your poop is too strong for our Pull-Up."

It worked!

My daughter has been going pee on the potty for the past month but she will not go #2 on the potty. Any suggestions?
